Making Schools Inclusive

There are LGBTI+ young people in most post primary schools across Ireland. BeLonG To Youth Services is the national organisation supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI+) young people across Ireland.

NPCpp supports the ongoing work of BeLong To, and endorses and supports the annual BeLong To Stand Up Awareness Week. Stand Up Awareness Week is a time for post primary schools across Ireland to join together and take a stand against homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying. This week provides an opportunity for schools and school communities to look at how they can make the school environment a safe and supportive place for LGBTI+ students. According to research from BeLong To one in five young LGBTI+ people face bullying, and that 70% of young LGBTI+ students feel unsafe at school.

There are a number of ways that parents can support national initiatives to encourage inclusiveness in school communities. For more information on support services for LGBTI+ young people, please click here.
