Further Education and Training – Right on your Doorstep

Further education and training (FET) offers post-secondary students thousands of routes into their chosen career, from engineering to auctioneering and beyond, through a network of education and training boards (ETB) covering every county in Ireland.

These opportunities are available in every county in Ireland. From the outmost reaches of the Donegal coast to Cork City Centre, thousands of students are learning the skills and gaining the knowledge they need to start their careers and pursue further learning through a network of institutes, colleges and training centres.

In the current circumstances, and in light of restrictions of movement, some students may decide to remain close to home for the time being or perhaps the college on their doorstep is the only place they ever wanted to go and offers everything they want, such as for World Skills Championship finalist Clare Cullen.

For others, they may wish to spread their wings and study further from home. If that’s the case, a diverse range of courses are available nationally, whether you want to base yourself in the peace and quiet of the west coast or seek out the bright lights of a big city.

Whether in Tipperary, Mayo, Limerick or Monaghan, there are FET colleges and training centres ready to take on a new class of 2020.

Donegal ETB

Donegal has been dubbed as the ‘coolest place on the planet’ by the National Geographic. Not a bad endorsement!

There are institutes and centres located throughout the county, which offer courses in a variety of sectors ranging from business administration to healthcare, as well as a range of 27 ‘craft’ apprenticeships.

For students more interested in being outdoors than sitting at a desk, Donegal ETB owns and manages Gartan Outdoor Education and Training Centre, offering an Outdoor Activity Instructor Traineeship programme.

From Letterkenny to the remote area of Gartan, the opportunities are as endless as the scenery.

Read about Donegal ETB’s recent Welding graduate Laura Mulkeen, who left an event management career in Belfast and to pursue a course in welding and is now working on Ireland’s biggest building site, or Fran Duffy who headed to Donegal to pursue her dream of a life on the waves.

Cork ETB

From cloud computing to veterinary nursing and from market gardening to culinary arts, Cork Education & Training Board (Cork ETB) offers hundreds of further education and training courses to get students started on their career path.

From the city centre located Cork College of Commerce to Kinsale College of Further Education there is a huge variety of locations and courses for post-secondary students.

Read about one such student, Danay Berhane, who graduated from Cork College of Commerce and went on to win the international ‘Dairy Chef of the Year’ award and take up a job in the Michelin Star restaurant in Adare Manor.

Dublin ETB

Stretching from Balbriggan in the north of the capital to Dún Laoghaire in the south, Dublin and Dún Laoghaire Education and Training Board (DDLETB) offers a comprehensive range of courses for all ages.

Stretching across our capital city, this ETB encompasses all that Dublin has to offer, including a range of courses to begin a career in any number of fields.

For those who may want to fly the nest from outside the county, or for Dublin locals like Clare Cullen, for whom her local college was the only place she wanted to attend after leaving cert, and since went on to represent the country at the World Skills Championships, there is lot’s on offer.

Find out more about all the ETBs stretching across the country here, and find out about some of the FET graduates making waves in their chosen field here.
